How to Apply for Government Contracts as a Small Business
By Denise Daví, founder of DAVIA · Published · Updated
Short answer
Register your organisation on the Central Digital Platform (Find a Tender), find a suitable opportunity, read every tender document, decide honestly whether to bid, then prepare and submit your response through the buyer's chosen system before the deadline.
1. Register on the Central Digital Platform
GOV.UK guidance explains that suppliers bidding under the Procurement Act 2023 register on the Central Digital Platform, which stores core business details for reuse across bids and gives your organisation a unique identifier. Follow the official guide linked below for the current steps.
2. Choose opportunities that fit
Look for contracts that match your services, capacity and evidence. A smaller contract that you can deliver well is usually a better first bid than a large one that stretches your team.
3. Read the full tender pack
Tender packs typically include a specification, instructions, evaluation criteria, pricing schedules and terms. Check any eligibility requirements, mandatory documents and clarification deadlines before you start writing.
4. Make a bid/no-bid decision
Ask whether you meet the requirements, have relevant evidence, and have the time to respond well. Deciding not to bid is a legitimate, often sensible, outcome.
5. Prepare, check and submit
Plan who writes each answer, set internal deadlines ahead of the buyer's deadline, and check the response against the instructions before submitting through the buyer's system. Late submissions are normally rejected, so leave a margin.
